In a significant move towards bolstering Uganda’s digital landscape, innovators and regional hub staff at Muni University have just completed an intensive five-day training course. This hands-on training focused on vital areas such as data protection, cybersecurity, privacy, and regulatory compliance. The skills acquired during this session are essential for developing secure and compliant digital solutions from the very outset of product development.
This training session is part of the National ICT Innovation Hub’s broader initiative, which collaborates with regional hubs to strengthen innovation practices and promote responsible technology development. Such initiatives are aligned with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance’s Digital Transformation Roadmap. This roadmap emphasizes innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills as key components necessary for advancing Uganda’s digital economy.

Lailah Nalukwago, Project Management Specialist at the National ICT Innovation Hub, highlighted the importance of prioritizing digital defense for sustainable growth. “We are not just protecting data; we are building the trust necessary for Ugandan startups to scale in a competitive market,” she stated. This sentiment underscores the critical intersection of security and trust in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The context for this training is alarming, as the incidence of digital threats across Africa is on the rise. According to the 2025 State of Scams in Africa Report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, cyber-enabled fraud is costing the continent a staggering US$57.8 billion annually. Nearly 68% of surveyed African adults reported experiences with digital scams in the past year. These statistics highlight the urgent need for local capacity-building initiatives to effectively prevent and respond to cyber risks.
The immediate impact of the training was palpable among the local innovators who attended. “I used to think of security as something you add at the end, but this session showed me how to bake it into my product from day one,” shared James, one of the participants. “It is a game changer for protecting our users.” His feedback underscores a transformative shift in how developers are beginning to think about security.
Alice, another participant, expressed her newfound confidence: “Navigating the Data Protection and Privacy Act always felt daunting, but I now have a clear roadmap for compliance. This knowledge makes our product significantly more attractive to investors and customers.” This newfound clarity not only empowers the innovators but also enhances the overall trustworthiness of their products.
The technical sessions were facilitated by Datatrack Solutions Consult, who provided essential guidance and knowledge transferable to real-world applications. This collaboration illustrates the importance of industry partners in equipping local talent with the skills required to thrive in today’s tech landscape.
