Global C-Suite Leaders Eye U.S. Market Expansion
Recent findings from a comprehensive survey by CSC indicate a significant shift in global investment strategies, with nearly 45% of C-suite leaders planning to establish a legal entity in the United States within the next year. This data showcases a robust desire to penetrate one of the largest consumer markets in the world, amidst a backdrop of complex regulatory challenges.
Research Insights
CSC conducted a survey of 300 C-level executives from large organizations across Europe, the U.K., Asia Pacific, and South America. The goal was to assess global sentiment regarding entry into the U.S. market, focusing on expansion plans, strategic drivers, and regulatory hurdles. The results were striking: alongside the near half of executives planning immediate entry, an additional 27% expressed interest in entering the market within the next two to three years.
Drivers of U.S. Market Entry
A notable trend emerges from the data: operational and strategic benefits are primary motivators for these executives. Approximately 65% of respondents identified supply chain or manufacturing efficiency as vital in establishing a U.S. presence. Equally significant, 56% cited strategic positioning—such as partnerships and acquisitions—as essential, with the same proportion emphasizing access to capital markets as a driving factor.
Myrna Reijnders, market leader for the Americas at CSC, underscores this movement, stating, “There’s a clear trend of U.K., European, and Asia-Pacific multinationals incorporating a U.S. entity to reach the approximately 340 million consumers or investors in the U.S.” The sectors experiencing this surge vary widely, encompassing retail, insurance, healthcare, and technology, including critical infrastructures like data centers.
Regulatory Challenges Ahead
Despite the enthusiasm for market entry, C-suite leaders are acutely aware of the obstacles involved. A striking 88% of those surveyed view federal and state tax reporting as the most burdensome compliance requirement, closely followed by employment and labor regulations at 80%.
Many executives are discovering that the realities of operating in the U.S. often exceed their initial expectations. Roughly 50% of companies already infiltrated in the market reported being taken aback by the complexity of tax and financial reporting mandates once they commenced operations.
Turning to Outsourcing
The intricate landscape of compliance has led many companies to consider outsourcing as an effective risk management strategy. An impressive 79% of executives indicated they might outsource U.S. compliance or governance functions, with 62% marking this as “very likely.” This trend signals a shift toward seeking specialized support to navigate the regulatory framework effectively.
Jenn Kenton, chief commercial officer at CSC, elaborates on the challenges: “Companies assume doing business in the U.S. means you’re operating within a single jurisdiction. However, rules and requirements can differ at the federal, state, and local levels. Successfully establishing and maintaining a U.S. business requires navigating these complexities.”
