In a striking statistic, one study noted that the number of electronic controllers in combine harvesters increased fivefold in just 15 years.
This surge in technological sophistication has significantly escalated the cost of agricultural equipment, with some components alone costing over R1 million. In South Africa, the slow but steady adoption of these innovations has led to a more nuanced risk landscape in agriculture, requiring specialized insurance solutions.

Botha notes that insurers are beginning to accommodate client requests to insure vehicles above their retail value, up to agreed percentages, as long as this increase is validated at the claim stage. Tools such as TransUnion’s Vehicle Price Index, which assesses the relationship between new and used vehicle price increases, could prove beneficial for insurers navigating these evolving market conditions.
