The Beginning of a Tech Journey

Choosing a career path is often a daunting task, especially when you’re young and full of aspirations. My journey began with a decision to study Electronic Engineering and Communications. However, after a year, I quickly realized it wasn’t aligning with my career goals. The frustration that followed led to a period of reflection and temporary stasis—visiting the gym and watching TV became my daily cycle.

The turning point came when I decided to pivot towards Computer Information Systems. This decision was rooted in my early love for technology; at just ten years old, I was programming in BASIC on a Timex Sinclair computer. I spent hours copying instructions from the manual, fascinated as I manipulated codes to create colorful, moving shapes on the screen.

By high school, this foundational knowledge paid off—my programming abilities astounded my teachers, and by the time I graduated college, I was eager to embark on a professional adventure that would allow me to learn and experiment further.

From Mid-Management to CIO

My first role was relatively simple, but it provided the freedom to innovate. As time passed, I sought more challenging opportunities, which led me to a mid-management position in a federal government agency in Mexico. This marked the beginning of my professional whirlwind over two decades ago.

Initially overseeing administrative tasks for a large IT infrastructure department focused on national security, I quickly rose to a director position—just as two significant projects were kicking off. These experiences shaped my career in ways I couldn’t have envisioned. However, the demanding 75-hour workweeks urged me to consider my next move.

Shortly thereafter, I received an unexpected call from an HR department seeking a leader for the IT department of a smaller government agency, but with immense responsibilities. This opportunity marked the official start of my journey as a CIO.

My career has since taken me through various organizations, including government agencies, an insurance broker, and even a space agency. Eventually, my wife and I relocated to Austin, Texas, where I now oversee IT strategy and operations for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Celebrating Career Milestones

One of my greatest sources of pride lies in the teams I’ve cultivated throughout my career. Even years after departing from roles, it’s gratifying to witness former team members continuing to thrive and collaborate as I had encouraged them to do.

Recognizing tangible changes I’ve spearheaded within organizations is another source of pride. Seeing employees acknowledge the real impact of our collective work on their daily operations is immensely fulfilling.

Awards and Recognitions

Throughout my career, I’ve received several accolades, including being named one of Mexico’s Top 100 CIOs for four consecutive years. In 2022, I was honored to be recognized as the second-most innovative CIO in the country and featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine as a “Digital Transformation Genius.” This recognition stemmed from leading a transformative initiative that turned a traditional radio broadcasting company into a significant player in the digital landscape.

By redefining the entire advertising lifecycle and enabling real-time operations, this initiative not only improved efficiency but also repositioned the organization as a top radio network in the country.

More recently, I was awarded The CIO Professional Network’s CIO Cup, which holds particular significance for me as my first accolade in the United States. It reaffirmed my decision to move here and validated my experiences and efforts in a new environment.

Priorities as a Technology Leader

As a technology leader, my top priorities are clear:

1. Leadership Development: My primary goal is to be the best leader for my team and organization. Continuous learning about leadership, human behavior, and industry trends is essential to achieving this.

2. Technological Awareness: I constantly strive to understand new technologies while effectively communicating my insights to colleagues, ensuring everyone is on the same page.

3. Strategic Guidance: Helping my organization navigate its path toward future goals—often unclear—is a challenging yet rewarding aspect of my role. I aim to bring clarity to our objectives and create structured strategies to reach them.

Finding Balance Outside Work

Decompressing from the pressures of an executive role is crucial. Music serves as my sanctuary; I enjoy playing guitar and piano, along with singing. I even launched a YouTube channel dedicated to music, showcasing my multi-instrument talents and vocal abilities through a project I call “Dissociative Identity Disorder.”

Photography is another passion, although my busy schedule has slowed my pursuits in that area. My wife and I are also avid movie enthusiasts, dedicating quality time to watching films together, both in theaters and in our custom home theater.

Challenges for CIOs Today

CIOs today face several pressing challenges, most notably the relentless demand for innovation. Many organizations struggle to keep up due to budget constraints, cultural shifts, or regulatory pressures. The vast number of available solutions and technologies can be bewildering, making it a challenge to identify the best fit for specific circumstances.

Additionally, cybersecurity risks are ever-evolving, posing significant headaches as organizations rely increasingly on technology for their operations. Balancing innovation with cost while modernizing legacy systems is a recurring theme in many discussions within the industry. Talent acquisition and retention continue to be another significant hurdle—one that every CIO grapples with.

Advice for Aspiring CIOs

For those aspiring to become a CIO, I offer a few insights:

• Embrace opportunities for learning about the wider business landscape.
• Engage continuously in building soft skills.
• Say “yes” to challenging assignments while knowing when to decline.
• Foster a reputation for solutions-oriented thinking.
• Establish credibility within your organization.
• Keep an eye on the larger picture and strategize for the future.

And perhaps most importantly, always understand the impact of your decisions before taking action.
